GENITOURINARY - Bacterial Vaginosis, Pregnancy (Anaerobes, Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, polymicrobial)

 

 

Metronidazole*

Tabs: 250 mg, 500 mg

 

Adult: 250 mg PO three times daily for 7 days or 2 g once. (2-g dosing may be less effective than the 7 day regimen).

 

Food: Administer on empty stomach unless GI upset occurs, then with food.

 

Important side effects: Dizziness, headache, confusion, seizures, nausea, metallic taste, insomnia, paresthesias. May cause disulfiram-like reaction—avoid alcohol.

 

 

Clindamycin*

(Cleocin®)

Pregnancy: B; Lactation: Unknown

 

Caps: 150 mg , 300 mg    

 

Adult: 300 mg PO twice daily for 7 days.

 

*May cause severe colitis. Encourage patient to report severe, persistent, or bloody diarrhea.

 

Food: May administer without regard to food. Take with full glass of water to prevent esophagitis.

 

Important side effects: Diarrhea (may be severe), esophagitis.
