Erythromycin Estolate Suspension

(Ilosone®)

Oral Susp: 200mg/5mL, 400mg/5mL 

 

Neonate: 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses four times daily for 10-14 days.

125 mg/5 mL @ 50 mg/kg/day

4-5 kg (9-11 lb) = 2 mL Q6H

5.5-7 kg (12-15 lb) = 3 mL Q6H

7-8 kg (16-18 lb) = 4 mL Q6H

 

Food: With or without meals. Take with food if causes GI upset.

Important side effects: GI upset, hepatitis.

(Chlamydia trachomatis)  Comment: Consider referring sex partner for evaluation and treatment.

 

Doxycycline

(Vibramycin®)

Pregnancy: D; Lactation: Unsafe

 

Tabs: 50 mg, 100 mg  

Caps: 50 mg, 100 mg

 

 

Children ≥8 years and Adult: 100 mg twice daily for 7 days.

Food: May take with food if GI upset occurs. Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids, iron, milk, or other dairy products. Take with full glass of water to prevent esophagitis.

Important side effects: Photosensitivity, esophagitis. May discolor fingernails.

 

 

Azithromycin

(Zithromax®)

Pregnancy: B; Lactation: Unk

 

Tabs: 250 mg    

Powder for Oral Suspension:

1-g packet    

 

 

Children 45 kg and Adult:

1 g PO x 1 dose.

 

Food: 1-g powder packet for oral suspension and tablets without regard to food.

 

Important side effects: Nausea, diarrhea, elevated LFTs.

 

Erythromycin Base

(E-Mycin®, Eryc®)

Pregnancy: B; Lactation: Safe

 

Tabs: 250 mg, 333 mg, 500 mg

Caps Delayed Release: 250 mg

 

 

Children ≥40 kg (88 lb) and Adult: 500 mg four times daily for 7 days.

Less effective than doxycycline or azithromycin. Consider retesting 3 weeks after therapy.

 

 

Food: May take with or without meals. Take with food if causes GI upset.

 

Important side effects: GI upset, hepatitis. Drug interactions may be significant.
