SKIN - Lice - Body (Pediculus humanus corporis)

General statement: Body lice does not usually require Rx therapy. Lice and nits reside within clothing. Discard clothing or wash in hot cycle and iron seams to eradicate infestation.

 

 

 

SKIN - Lice - Pubic (Phthirus pubis) May infest pubic area, axilla, coarse truncal hair, or eyelashes. General statement: Do not apply pediculicides to eyelids; use petrolatum to eyelid margins Q12H × 8 days, if needed. Symptomatic treatment may include oral antihistamines or topical corticosteroids to reduce pruritus. Secondary bacterial infections (often caused by scratching) may require antistaphylococcal therapy, such as dicloxacillin or cephalexin.

 

Permethrin

Nix Cream Rinse®

Cream 5%: For scabies only.

 

Cream Rinse 1%:

 

 

Children ≥2 months and Adult:

Cream Rinse: Wash hair and adjacent area, towel dry, saturate hair with Nix, and rinse after 10 minutes. Remove remaining nits with nit comb. One treatment eliminates infestations. Repeat only if live lice are seen after 7 days. Wash bedding and all clothing. Vacuum furniture and dispose of bag. Avoid contact with eye(s) and mucous membranes.

 

 

Important side effects: Mild temporary itching or erythema.

Caution: Contraindicated if allergic to chrysanthemum flower.

 

Pyrethrins/piperonyl butoxide

(RID®, A-200®, Pronto®, others)

Pregnancy: C; Lactation: Unk

 

 

 

Children and Adult: Apply to dry hair. After 10 minutes, wash hair, rinse thoroughly. Comb out hair with nit comb. Repeat in 7-10 days. Wash bedding and all clothing. Vacuum furniture and dispose of bag.

 

 

Important side effects: Burning and pruritus.

 

Caution: Contraindicated if allergic to ragweed or chrysanthemum flower.
