Caps: 250 mg, 500 mg Tabs: 500 mg, 875 mg E. coli resistance increasing.

Adolescent and Adult: 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. |
Food: With or without meals.
Important side effects: Diarrhea and nausea. May cause nonallergic maculopapular rash.
Reduce dose in renal disease (CrCl <30 mL/min). |
Cephalexin (Keflex®) Generics available Pregnancy: B; Lactation: Unk
Tabs: 250 mg, 500 mg, 1 g Caps: 250 mg, 500 mg |
Adolescent and Adult: 500 mg every 6 hours for 7 days. |
Food: May take with food if GI upset occurs.
Important side effects: GI upset, diarrhea.
Reduce dose in renal disease (CrCl <40 mL/min).

Trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole* (Bactrim®, Septra®) Generics available Pregnancy: C; Lactation: Unsafe
Single strength (SS) Tabs: 80 mg/400 mg
Double Strength (DS) Tabs: 160 mg/800 mg
*E. coli resistance may be 15-20% and increasing. * Avoid using near term (within 2 weeks of delivery).

Adolescent and Adult: 1 DS tablet twice daily for 7 days. |
Food: May take without regard to food. Encourage fluids.
Important side effects: Photosensitivity, rash . Reduce dose in renal disease (CrCl <30 mL/min). |
